Gift Giving: Kids & Money

I had a bit of a wake-up call in regards to kids and money.  When I was a child (EONS ago) my grandma would send me cards (Birthday's, Christmas, etc) with money enclosed.  I remember loving that! I would put the money into my piggy bank.  OR buy candy & toys "with my own money" - I loved feeling financially independent.  I clearly remember saying to my mom (when she would say "no"), that I have my OWN money. Her "no" always superseded my "own money" claims, by the way.  Mom is law.  Then, now, and forever.

Here's my wake up call: I was spending time with my tween niece and I asked her what a good gift would be for me to give to her slightly younger cousin.  I thought I was clever when asking her if she thought that money would be good.  I was wrong.  I changed it up and asked HER if it were her birthday if she would prefer a gift (with the chance of her not liking it) or money (so that she can buy EXACTLY what she wanted).  I was a little shocked when she told me that she would prefer to receive a surprise gift over cash.  Ha!  My theory was wrong that all kids love getting money.  Money ISN'T everything. My niece is wise in saying that it's more thoughtful and fun to unwrap a present  EVEN if it 1) Is not her taste 2) Is not her size and 3)It's not "cool" buy the kid's standards.  Man that girl is great. Kids. Amazing.

Also, gift bags vs. wrapped gifts: Skip the gift bag.  Easy for us - not as fun to open for them.
